At the start of each year, we all do the resolution ritual! We set goals of all the things we want to accomplish over the course of the year. As we all know, the #1 goal people have is related to fitness and health which is great. But the question is, how many of us can sustain those goals?

Sustaining our New Year's resolutions is a challenge for many of us! We are riding high on all the "fresh start" vibes but then when those emotions fizzle out, do we have what it takes to push through until the end?

This year, I am taking a different approach to setting my goals, resolutions and or intentions (call it what you may). I am using these 5 tips to ensure my success:

Strategize: first, I am going to start with evaluating the goals I did not accomplish last year. For example, I did have a weight loss goal that I did accomplish last year but the quarantine 15 has set me back. So, I am restating these goals for 2021! The purpose of doing a look back is because success in your new goals may need to build upon the ones you didn't accomplish. No one wants to build on a shaky foundation right? Sort of like a complex math problem.... if you can't do 1+1, how in the heck will you do X+Y= Z??? So, start here first - look back before you can look ahead.

Identify new opportunities that you want to meet this year. Each year comes with new opportunities and new challenges. As you think about this year and what's unique about it - Covid19, Virtual schooling, etc. - do these circumstances present any new and unique opportunities for you or any challenges for that matter? In order to win, you have to understand the environment you are operating in.

Timelines are key! You must understand how long it will take you to achieve your goal! Is it a short term goal that can be accomplished in 1 quarter? Is it a multi-year goal that only a piece can be accomplished within the year? Whatever it is, set the timeline and know how long it is going to take.

Checkpoints - set points in time where you can check in with your self to see how your tracking towards your goals. Don't just say, I want to lose 30lbs this year! Say, I want to lose 3lbs this month. And check in with yourself every month to see how it's going.

Remember those who fail to plan, plan to fail! So make a plan so that you can look back on this year and say to yourself, "I did that"!

Cheers!
